Project Overview

CAPSULE, based in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, was built out of a family trucking business with decades of experience in logistics and operations. Looking to create a more scalable model, owner Chase Daugherty expanded into portable storage, leveraging existing equipment, knowledge, and infrastructure.

The Approach

From the start, CAPSULE focused on simplicity and consistency across every part of the business. Rather than customizing each order, the team standardized container sizes, pricing models, delivery methods, and customer expectations.

This created a repeatable system that could scale efficiently without unnecessary complexity.

โ€œWe wanted consistency across everything we did. The simpler the system, the easier it is to grow.โ€

Chase Daugherty, CAPSULEย

Early Growth

CAPSULE launched as a one-man operation, with calls routed directly to Chaseโ€™s cell phone and deliveries handled individually.

The first container was delivered the same day the customer called. It then took nearly two weeks to secure the second rental.

Within four months, the business expanded to include its first driver and a 48-container fleetโ€”laying the groundwork for future growth. CAPSULE has continued placing container orders since launch, maintaining steady expansion.

Early on, customer education was a key challenge. Many customers were unfamiliar with portable storage or confused it with moving services or traditional shipping containers. As awareness improved, demand became more consistent.

Scaling the Business

Once marketing and positioning were refined, CAPSULE experienced rapid growthโ€”scaling to 200 containers in under 14 months.

Despite this momentum, the team maintained a disciplined approach, avoiding overextension and focusing on steady, strategic growth.

โ€œWe take a โ€˜20 Mile Marchโ€™ approach. Weโ€™ve grown through both strong and slower years without overextending.โ€ย

Standardized Equipment

Standardization extends beyond operations to equipment.

Since launching in 2018, CAPSULE has exclusively used Boxwell portable storage containers. This consistency has allowed the team to streamline delivery, simplify operations, and maintain a reliable customer experience as the business has grown.

By aligning equipment with their operating model, CAPSULE has reduced complexity and built a system that scales efficiently.

Facility and Infrastructure

CAPSULE operates out of a secure yard with approximately five acres of fenced and paved space, with the ability to expand by an additional eight acres.

Rather than relying on warehouse space, the company prioritized owned landโ€”giving them greater control over long-term costs and scalability.

Operations and Delivery

Operational efficiency is central to the CAPSULE model.

The business runs on a structured delivery system built around consistency and clear expectations. CAPSULE utilizes Cardinal Mule delivery systems and schedules deliveries by day rather than specific time slots. Customers are notified in advance and updated when the driver is on the way.

Approximately 80% of customers are not present during delivery, allowing routes to run efficiently without delays.

By setting expectations upfront and maintaining a consistent process, CAPSULE has built an operation that prioritizes both efficiency and reliability.

Customer Use Cases

CAPSULE serves a wide range of customers, with demand split between on-site storage and moving/relocation.

On-site storage is commonly used by homeowners during renovations or by commercial customers needing temporary space for equipment and materials.

The other half of the business supports moving and relocation, including customers between homes who need temporary storage. CAPSULE also offers storage at their yard, providing additional flexibility.

This balanced mix allows the business to adapt to seasonal demand while maintaining consistent utilization.

A standout example includes supporting the Texas Rangers during their move into a new stadiumโ€”highlighting the scale and versatility of portable storage.

Market Evolution

The Dallas-Fort Worth market has become increasingly competitive, with more operators managing large container fleets. Pricing pressure has also increased, with rates below previous peak levels.

Despite these shifts, CAPSULE has maintained steady growth by focusing on operational consistency, disciplined decision-making, and long-term planning.

Key Takeaways

CAPSULEโ€™s approach highlights several lessons for portable storage operators:

1. Keep systems simple and repeatableย ย

2. Standardize operations and equipmentย ย

3. Maintain control over infrastructure and overheadย ย

4. Focus on long-term sustainability over short-term growthย ย

โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid to oversimplify. The more consistent your system is, the better your business will run.โ€ย
