At Boxwell, we take pride in delivering high-quality, relocatable storage units designed to last. Behind every successful self-storage installation stands a dedicated team of installers. These Boxwell professionals travel across the country to assemble and place units at customer sites. They form the backbone of our operations, ensuring each unit is constructed efficiently and correctly. No matter the conditions or equipment available, they adapt to each project’s unique challenges.

From maneuvering heavy materials with skid loaders to fine-tuning each component for a perfect fit, Boxwell installers take on a hands-on role. This role demands technical skill, problem-solving ability, and adaptability. Let’s take a closer look at a recent self-storage installation where our team overcame unexpected hurdles to complete a smooth and successful build.

Meet Alex Jackson, a Boxwell Installer, sharing his experience of a day on the job—where every install brings a new and unique challenge!

Site Preparation and Organization

This 10×20 build day went well overall, especially considering we used a skid steer for assembly instead of a telehandler. The prefabbed fork extensions that came with the skid steer were a lifesaver. I’m not sure it would have been possible to build the units without them. When I got there, everything had already been down-stacked off the skids and organized by unit numbers, and the owner had already placed unit pieces around the site where he wanted them to end up.

Building 10×20 Relocatable Units

We got started with building one of their two-door units. They didn’t have the diamond-plated flooring, so we could assemble the base on the ground and take the floorboards out to bolt them together.

I didn’t think the skid steer was going to be able to lift and set the back wall segment like we do with the telehandler, but to my surprise, it worked.

The rest of the unit came together relatively quickly and easily.

Roof Installation

The roof took a bit more time. The most time-consuming part was threading the longer bolts through both the brace and roof pieces and aligning the end of the brace bolts—but with a little patience, it all came together.

We had to get as much slack out of the straps as possible to be able to set the roof with the skid steer. But once again, we pulled it off!

After we finished up the two door unit, two people helping had to leave. We kept going with the three remaining installers and got a single door unit put together. The customer wanted to be sure to see any kind of differences between the two unit configurations.

After getting the second unit put together, we didn’t have time to hang the roll up doors , but the customer didn’t mind. They have installed roll up doors in the past, so they were comfortable enough to install them on their own.

By the end of the installation, the customer was satisfied with the results. Even with the use of a steer skid, our teams preparation ensured a smooth and efficient assembly. The customer was ready to complete the rest of the units on his own.

Key Takeaways from the Install

  • Pre-planning matters: Pre-positioning parts on-site speeds up the process.

  • Fork extensions are key: The prefabricated fork extensions enabled the skid loader to perform tasks that would otherwise require more specialized equipment.

  • Roof assembly requires patience: Aligning and securing roof panels demands careful attention.

  • Customer feedback is invaluable: Written instructions are important for some customers, in addition to on-site expertise.
