This week, the Boxwell team stepped away from our desks and headed to our demo site for a hands-on build day. Sales, marketing, operations, finance, and leadership all showed up with the same goal:ย assembleย two 8×20 portable storage unitsย from flat-packed panels into fully operational storage units.ย
Build days arenโt just about putting steel together. Instead, they allow us to understand our product at ground level. When our team assembles units ourselves, we gain first-hand insight into the installation process our customers experience on build day.

It Starts Flat-Packedย
Like allย Boxwells, the units arrived flat-packed inside an ocean container. Shipping units this way reduces transportation costs, improvesย logisticsย efficiency, and maximizes how many portable storage units can ship at once.ย
Once the container is opened, the team down-stacks the flat-packed panels and stages them for assembly. A forklift moves and positions the units on the concrete lot at our demo site. Because we assemble the units on-site, operators gain flexibility in layout design. Additionally, since these are relocatable portable storage units, operators can reposition them later if site plans evolve.ย
The process is organized from the start. We pack units intentionally, group hardware together, and design every component to move from container to installation without confusion.

The Portable Storage Unit Build Processย
With materials staged, assembly begins.
First, the team removes packing materials and lifts off the roof panel, setting it aside. Next, we raise the side walls into position. Then, we lift and secure the end walls with swing doors. Once all four walls stand in place, the team bolts and tightens the structure to secure it. Finally, we reinstall the roof and complete a full tightening check to ensure the portable storage unit is secure and rent-ready.
Itโs a straightforward system, but precision matters. As soon as the walls align and the bolts lock into place, the structure transforms from individual panels into a solid, revenue-generating storage unit.
During our build day, we assembled two 8×20 portable storage units in less than two hours, including staging and photos. Each individual unit takes about 30 minutes to assemble with the Boxwell install team. Seeing that timeline play out in real time highlights the speed and efficiency of modular portable storage installation.

Why Hands-On Build Experience Mattersย
One of the biggest takeaways from the day was how quickly the structure comes together once the walls are raised. For team members who had not participated in a build day before, it was eye-opening. What looks complex inside a shipping container becomes logical once the sequence is understood.
Build days are not just about installing units. Rather, they strengthen how we support self-storage operators. When the sales team discusses install timelines, when marketing explains site layouts, or when leadership talks through expansion strategies, everyone speaks from direct experience.
That matters because storage operators depend on accuracy. Understanding the portable storage installation process from start to finish allows us to confidently set expectations and support expansion projects with clarity.
A Smarter Way to Expand with Portable Storageย
Portable storage is not simply about adding steel structures to your property. Instead, itโs about activating unused space and accelerating revenue.
When you install Boxwell portable storage units at your facility, you add rentable inventory without waiting on extended construction timelines. Rather than spending months navigating permits, contractors, and site disruption, operators can assemble portable units quickly and integrate them into an existing layout.
Because the units are relocatable, they are not locked into a permanent footprint. If your facility evolves, the units can move with it. As a result, operators can test demand, expand in phases, and adjust site flow without committing to irreversible construction.
Speed also impacts revenue. The faster teams assemble units, the sooner customers can rent them. Every day shaved off a traditional construction schedule brings your facility one step closer to generating income.

From Open Ground to Rent-Ready Portable Storage Unitsย
These build days reinforce something bigger. At Boxwell, no one is removed from our products. Not sales, not marketing, and not leadership.
We host build days to sharpen how we serve self-storage operators. If youโre evaluating portable storage expansion, preparing for peak season, or planning phased facility growth, details matter. Install speed matters. Layout flexibility matters. Revenue timing matters. And the team supporting you should understand every step firsthand.
That hands-on knowledge is exactly why we continue to host these build days.ย
