Moving is a universal experience – almost everyone moves at least a couple times over the course of their lives. Whether you are moving across town or across the country, the process can be somewhat complicated, time and energy intensive, and stressful. Because moving is so common, however, we have tons of information about it! At Boxwell, we’re of the opinion that knowledge is power. Read on to learn some of the most essential moving statistics you should keep in your back pocket.
1. The average person typically takes 182 days to fully unpack after moving.
According to the New York Post, actually moving your belongings takes at most a few days. However, you’ll likely still be unpacking for months afterwards! You’ll unpack your essentials, of course, but it can be hard to find the time (or motivation) to unpack fully after the whole ordeal of moving.
2. West Virginia, New York, South Dakota, Louisiana, and Illinois have the highest exit rates.
An article on Forbes notes that the highest volume of people move away from the aforementioned states. This could be for a wide variety of reasons, including seeking a lower cost of living, warmer weather, or more job opportunities.
3. Most people are moving to Washington, Idaho, North Carolina, Tennessee, and New Mexico.
The same Forbes article notes that many people are moving to these states for economic reasons. Note that they also have warmer climates, as well!
4. At 16%, the primary reason people move is due to finding a better house.
Move.org states that the most common reason for moving is to find a new or better home. Better home features like square footage, number of bedrooms, or a pool tend to form the basis for moving motivation for most people.
5. The average U.S. citizen moves 11.4 times over the course of their lives.
In comparison with the rest of the world, Americans move the most! While this typically happens in their 20s and 30s, many also move at or near retirement age for the reasons you’d expect.
6. In America, most people move between May 30 and June 1.
Most Americans tend to move around Memorial Day weekend. Many people have off this weekend – and many children have off from school – making it an ideal time to move. On top of that, the weather is often nice, making for a smoother moving experience.
7. The average move for a three-bedroom house can take up to 80-100 boxes.
Although this figure from Angie’s List might sound like a jaw-dropper, remember that these boxes will be of all shapes and sizes. On top of that, many people downsize as they move – using a portable storage container to help you sort, organize, and separate your belongings as you pack can be a lifesaver as you declutter.
Portable storage containers can be used in a variety of ways to help facilitate the moving process and make your life much easier. To learn more about Boxwell and our moving and storage containers and services, call (303) 317-5850 or contact us online today!
