For this Boxwell Team Spotlight, allow us to introduce you to Tanya Meyer, the head of our finance department. If you’ve had the privilege of working with Tanya, you’ve likely experienced her all-business demeanor—wise, articulate, and to the point. While Tanya holds the role of Controller for Boxwell’s finance department, her talents extend beyond her precision and expertise. Tanya also loves the freedom and chaos of the outdoors and the arts. She spends time camping, fly fishing, trail running, drawing, and creating pottery in her home studio. Plus, she is one of the kindest and most soft-spoken people you will ever meet. So, how did Boxwell find Tanya?
Tanya attended Pratt in NYC and got her BFA in drawing with the goal of being a professional artist. Post-graduation, she decided the art world was not for her and went to work with rare books. She enjoyed the opportunity to handle some one-of-a-kind prints. For example, artist monographs and modern first editions. Plus, she got to see out-of-print titles, signed books, ephemera, and antiquarian books. Tanya also ventured into the hospitality industry and worked on the membership team at Soho House New York. When she left NYC, Tanya moved to Boulder to be closer to nature. After answering an ad on Craigslist, Tanya found herself at Boxwell. She was searching ‘Salesforce’ as a keyword, and Boxwell was the only company that popped up in her search. It was over six years ago when Tanya joined Boxwell as its fourth employee.
For this edition of our Boxwell Team Spotlight, we asked Tanya a few questions:
What is something about yourself that most people do not know?
I love dive bar karaoke and I have a list of songs on my phone just in case! I also have a karaoke mic at home so I can sing all the weird songs no one would ever want to hear in public.
If you are having a difficult day, what helps?
A hug.
Say you are forced to completely change your current career, what would you choose to do instead?
Most likely, I would end up in the archives at a museum, private collection, or library.
Tell us about your ideal vacation. If you could only bring a backpack for the week, what would you bring?
Fly fishing in New Zealand. My backpack would contain a jacket, sun shirt, book, sunscreen, ChapStick, and bug net.
When you were 10 years old, what did you imagine you would be doing now?
At 10, I wanted to be a news anchor or journalist.
Favorite movie?
The Red Shoes (a 1948 British drama film about an aspiring ballerina who joins the world-renowned Ballet Lermontov). I will watch any movie about ballet, but The Red Shoes is my favorite.
Best sandwich?
Egg sammy with hot sauce.
When not at work, Tanya enjoys creating pottery at her home ceramic studio. In her free time, Tanya hand-builds small vessels and sculptures. She uses the Nerikomi pottery technique, which stacks colored clay to make patterns. She likes this technique because it is meditative, and process based. It requires a lot of time and patience to mix the colors into a porcelain base — It suits her methodical nature. And opening the kiln and seeing a piece in its final state is such a treat. And although you sometimes get a cracked or exploded piece, you must accept that it is part of the process.
